The Committee of the Whole will review the CDM Smith combined sewer findings Wednesday night.

CDM Smith will present its findings on the combined sewer area to the Arlington Heights Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, Jan. 20.

The village suffered basement backups and street flooding in the Combined Sewer Tributary Area (CSTA) during heavy rainstorms in 2010, 2008, 2002 and 2001. The study covers the area of CSTA that experienced flooding during these storm events.

CDM Smith was contracted to develop a model of the combined sewer area and evaluate the system's performance. It will also present potential improvements. The village would like to know if the existing system can provide protection from basement backups during a one-hour storm that drops 2.1 inches of rain -- with effective measures for preventing basement backups in place.

While constructing new relief sewers would provide additional capacity, if a storm produces more rain than the design permits, basement backups may still occur. The board would like to incorporate green solutions in the overall plan to reduce runoff and wet weather flows in the CSTA target area.

Estimates of construction costs to provide sewer improvements range from $0.04 to $11 million.
