The Village of Skokie has issued a statement regarding an incident at Shawnee Park on October 7, 2025, involving local youths. According to initial reports, one group was playing basketball when another group of similar age approached them. During the encounter, antisemitic language was used and gel pellets were fired at members of the first group.
Skokie Police responded to the scene, identified and interviewed all parties involved, and filed a report. The investigation has been completed and the case is now closed.
The Village follows its Procedure for Early Identification and Intervention in Initial Incidents of Hate. This procedure requires that all hate or bias incidents are documented and shared with the Human Relations Commission. The Commission reviews these incidents and provides recommendations on how to engage the community through education, dialogue, and collaboration.
This process aims to support affected residents and promote understanding within Skokie’s diverse community. Social services are also available for victims and their families.
The Village stated: “The Village of Skokie unequivocally condemns antisemitism, hate and bias in all forms. Skokie is a diverse, inclusive and caring community where acts of hate have no place. Recent data gathered during the Village’s strategic planning efforts further affirmed the community’s enduring commitment to Skokie’s rich, multicultural character. The Village takes every report of hate or bias seriously and remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the safety and well-being of all who live, work and visit here.”
Mayor Ann Tennes said: “There is no place for hate in Skokie. Our community has long been built on respect, inclusion and care for one another. The Village remains committed to standing against antisemitism and all forms of bias, and to ensuring that Skokie continues to be a safe and welcoming place for everyone.”
