When heavy, wet snow is piled against the wooden post of a mailbox, it could be damaged.
The City of Prospect Heights has a procedure in place to help residents get a temporary mailbox until spring. Public Works will install the temporary mailbox within one day of notification. After determining if the broken mailbox is the city's responsibility, a letter will be sent to the resident and, if applicable, the mailbox will be put on the replacement list.
Residents must call the entity that plows their streets. Those living on Euclid Ave., Schoenbeck Road, Willow Road, Hintz Road, Wheeling Road or Camp McDonald Road must call the county at 847-827-1164. Residents living on Milwaukee Ave., Elmhurst Road, Rand Road, Palatine Road and Wolf Road must call the state at 847-272-1246. Residents living on any other streets in Prospect Heights must call City Hall at 847-398-6070.
The city only uses pressure-treated four-by-four posts and black mailboxes. It will not reimburse homeowners for damaged mailboxes, install a mailbox that customer has purchased or pay for a different mailbox if the resident does not like the city-supplied mailbox. The new mailbox will be installed when the ground thaws.
