Planning for MLK celebration continues at Elgin Human Relations Commission meeting

Updates on the upcoming MLK celebration were discussed at the Jan. 5 Human Relations Commission meeting.

The upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, scheduled Jan. 16 through Jan. 18, was discussed at the Elgin Human Relations Commission meeting that was held Jan. 5.

The commissioners heard updates on the MLK weekend events.

The MLK weekend events will open with the Annual Prayer Breakfast, held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16. The $15 tickets are available at City Hall at the cashier's counter and in the human resources department. To reserve tickets for the breakfast, call 847-931-5607.

The public program at the Hemmens will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17. The final day of the weekend, Monday, Jan. 18, will feature the Youth Day of Service at the Centre of Elgin and a community food drive. Registration for the youth event begins at 8:30 a.m.; the food drive starts at 9 a.m.

In other business, the commission heard updates on the Diversity Committee, Black Lives Matter and community and police relations. The commission also discussed the Humanitarian Award nomination before adjourning.
