Prospect Heights police seek donations this month for American Cancer Society

Acsrelayforlife

The Prospect Heights Police Department (PHPD) is collecting donations this month for the American Cancer Society's (ACS) Relay for Life.

As part of the second annual fundraiser, which helps raise cancer awareness in the community, members of the PHPD will grow out their mustaches and beards through November while collecting donations through ACS Relay for Life events.

The focus of the Relay for Life events is to raise funds for cancer research and support free services for local patients. The PHPD will collect donations at the intersection of Rand and Thomas Streets on various days in November. Residents are welcome to meet with the PHPD and donate to the ACS 8:00-11:30 p.m. Saturday at the House of Music & Entertainment (HOME Bar), 1227 N. Rand Road, in Arlington Heights.

Founded in 1913 as the American Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC), the society aimed to educate the public about this dreaded disease. By 1945, it was reorganized into the modern ACS, and in 1946, philanthropist Mary Lasker and her colleagues took up the banner and raised over $4 million. That fundraising effort established the groundbreaking research that led to the first remission of childhood cancer using chemotherapy. Since 1946, ACS has spent more than $4 billion on cancer research and continues its efforts to educate the public, provide critical services for cancer patients, and support education and prevention efforts.
