With gasoline prices continuing to soar, Metra is offering some relief for Chicago area residents with the introduction of its $100 flat-rate “Super Saver” pass.
According to a news release from Metra, its pass will be offered during a three-month trial period beginning in July. In a Facebook post, State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi, R-Elmhurst, urged residents to “keep Metra in mind to avoid traffic.”
“Put simply, this is a great deal,” Metra Executive Director/CEO Jim Derwinski said in the news release. “For the price of a tank of gas or a trip to a baseball game, you can travel all over the Chicago area on Metra for a month. High gas prices already make Metra an affordable option versus driving, but this new monthly ‘Super Saver’ pass makes the choice even clearer.”
The program comes as more Americans may seek alternative forms of transportation amid rising gasoline prices, according to a News Nation report.
Moreover, Samuel Schwartz, a traffic consultant, told WCBS Newsradio that a 10% rise in gasoline prices usually results in a 2% drop in traffic, according to News Nation.
According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), gasoline prices in Illinois reached a record high of $5.26 on June 2, up from $3.26 a year ago. The AAA also noted that gasoline prices were averaging $5.61 per gallon in Cook County.
