ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 55: Moylan Highlights Pandemic Unemployment Assistance during COVID-19 Crisis

55

Illinois State House District 55 issued the following announcement on May 20

Acknowledging the thousands of Illinoisans who have been economically impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is highlighting the expanded benefits being made available to those who would not normally qualify for typical unemployment assistance.

“We are certainly living through unprecedented times brought about by this pandemic, and many have had their financial stability significantly impacted,” Moylan said. “For such an unprecedented crisis, creative and more inclusive economic assistance is required to protect the workers and businesses of our state.”

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) is a new program aimed at making unemployment benefits available to those who have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis and would otherwise be ineligible for them. Those who are small business owners, self-employed, independent contractors, have limited work history or others who would usually be ineligible for unemployment benefits may qualify for up to 39 weeks of unemployment insurance. Applicants must be out of business or have had to significantly reduce their services as a result of the pandemic. “Throughout this crisis, there have been many individuals who need help for their businesses’ and their own financial health,” Moylan said. “The new PUA program considers those who would not usually need these benefits, which is crucial for the viability of our economy as we continue through and move past this public health crisis.”
