Illinois State Senate District 27 issued the following announcement on May 24.
As part of a historic health care package that passed the Illinois Senate, State Senator Ann Gillespie (D-Arlington Heights) voted to pass legislation that would create a feasibility study on health care affordability.
“Too many people are left out of our health care coverage system because it is unaffordable for low- and middle-income families,” Gillespie said. “This study will look at a variety of options and best practices used in other states to see which is the best fit for Illinois.”
Senate Bill 1864 would require the Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) and Department of Insurance (DOI) to oversee a feasibility study exploring options to make health insurance more affordable for low- and middle-income residents. The study must include options being considered by other states, such as a public option. HFS and DOI must submit a final report that includes cost estimates, Illinois-specific actuarial analysis and a suggested program design by the end of February 2021.
In addition to the feasibility study, Senate Bill 1864 would create the Kidney Disease Prevention and Education Task Force, allow Medicaid to cover clinical trials and authorize HFS to take action on COVID-19.
Senate Bill 1864 passed the Illinois Senate 50-3 and awaits the governor’s signature.
