A protest is reportedly planned outside an Evanston fire station following the circulation of a photo depicting firefighters wearing Donald Trump masks. The image has sparked criticism, with some individuals labeling the firefighters as "racist Nazis."

"Controversy in Evanston, IL after a group of firefighters were photographed wearing Trump masks," Libs of TikTok wrote on X on January 23. "The libs are fuming and are now planning a protest outside the fire station. Some commenters are calling them racist Nazis while others are saying this makes them feel unsafe."

According to Evanston Now, the image, which surfaced on Reddit, appears to show individuals in Evanston Fire Department attire celebrating with Donald Trump masks and prominently displaying "#47." The identities of those in the photo remain unknown, but a city spokesperson confirmed that an internal investigation is underway.

Evanston’s code of ethics prohibits employees from engaging in political activity or using city resources for such purposes while on duty. In a statement, the city reiterated its commitment to professionalism and equitable service for all residents.

"Although the City cannot comment on the specifics of this investigation, we remain dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity among all employees," a city spokesperson said, according to Evanston Now. "We will continue to uphold our commitment to serving all community members fairly."

The Fire Chief reportedly apologized to the Mayor and City Council in an email following the image’s circulation; however, according to Evanston Now, the contents of the email have not been disclosed. The Fire Department has not issued a public comment on the matter.

Evanston Now reports that concerns have been raised among community members about potential political bias affecting first responders' impartiality in future incidents.
