City of Elgin issued the following announcement on Feb. 2.

The Elgin Literary Festival: The 5th annual Elgin Literary Festival (ELF) is a free celebration of the written word taking place at the Hemmens Cultural Center Friday and Saturday, January 25 and 26. The Festival highlights bookish culture and provides writers and readers a place to create and appreciate the art of writing. ELF 2019 will feature readings, book signings, discussion panels, and activities for readers and writers alike.

Dr. King Community Food Drive: The 8th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Food Drive is collecting food through January 20 with a  goal of collecting 30,000 pounds of food and household items this year. Drop-off centers include City Hall, all Fire Stations, the Elgin Police Department, most churches, Jewel stores, Butera stores, Elgin Fresh Market, John Sutton State Farm, Taylor YMCA and the YWCA Elgin. Food will be distributed to area food banks on Monday, January 21, 2019!

2019 Daddy Daughter Dance: Bring your daughter out for a magical evening of dinner and dancing. This year we are celebrating Princess Jasmine from "Aladdin" at the 2019 Daddy Daughter Dance. The evening will include a buffet dinner, dancing, photo, goodie bag and raffle prizes. One lucky girl will win an American Girl doll and there will be prizes for dad too. The buffet dinner will include items similar to pasta, chicken and salad. For more information please contact 311. This event regularly sells out.

Winter Market: The Downtown Neighborhood Association's Elgin Winter Market at takes place at the Elgin ArtSpace Lofts on the following- Saturdays: January 12, February 9, March 9 and April 13.There are several participating market vendors that vary by date based on their availability.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast: The 34th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast will be held on Saturday, January 19 at 8:30 a.m. at the Elgin Community College Business Conference Center. The event includes prayer, the presentation of Dr. King Humanitarian Awards to individuals and organizations, music and keynote speaker, Dr. Wes Scott.

Elgin Fire Department Annual Awards Ceremony: The Elgin Fire Department’s annual awards ceremony will recognize firefighters, citizens, organizations, groups and businesses for acts of heroism, volunteerism and dedicated service on Friday, February 22 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Grand Victoria Casino.
