Republican candidate Marilyn Smolenski recently questioned the motives behind her opponent’s refusal to sign a letter rejecting a progressive tax hike.

Rep. Martin Moylan (D-Des Plaines), who is seeking re-election against Smolenski for Illinois’ 55th District seat, is one of 67 lawmakers who opted not to sign the letter. The letter was circulated to every state representative in Illinois at the end of August, according to the Illinois Policy Institute (IPI).

“Why won’t (Rep. Martin) Moylan outright oppose any new tax hikes,” Smolenski asked on Facebook. “Moylan doesn’t care about lowering your taxes. He cares about getting his next donation from Madigan [who’s] already given him almost $1 million.”

A video Smolenski recently posted on Facebook shows Moylan rallying a crowd of state representatives with a chant of “Who do we like? Mike!”

“We all know who [sic] Moylan likes,” Smolenski said. “And it’s not you. Moylan is a cheerleader for one of the most detrimental leaders in Illinois state history. He's responsible for our skyrocketing property taxes, record breaking [sic] income tax hikes, and an abusive, toxic culture at our statehouse.”

The 55th House District includes the cities of Chicago, Des Plaines, Park Ridge and Rolling Meadows.
