Republican Candidate for the State House of Representatives Jillian Bernas called on her opponent to renounce statements made by Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) President Karen Lewis.
Bernas stated that Michelle Mussman, who is running against Bernas for House District 56, has received approximately $48,000 from the CTU. According to a release from Wednesday, Lewis had compared Illinois Gov. Rauner to an ISIS recruit and had stated that his activity could be seen as acts of terror on the working class and poor individuals.
Rauner had released a plan for school funding the previous week. The state’s Board of Education plan would increase overall funds for schools by $120 million, but the Chicago Public School system received a cut of $74 million within the same plan.
“It is unfounded, and I am uncertain where that term came from because I know the governor has been proposing compromises to improve state services for those who need them,” Bernas said. “And I know he supports reforms that lots of people in our community support, like term limits and redistricting.”
Bernas also stated that name-calling will not provide solutions for the problems facing the state, two of which she noted include the property taxes and many fourth-grade students being unable to read at that grade level.
