A ceremonial ribbon cutting was held recently for O’Hare's new Runway 10R/28L and a new south air traffic control tower, attended by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Mount Prospect Mayor Arlene Juracek, Federal Aviation Administration Deputy Administrator Michael Whitaker, Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) Commissioner Ginger Evans and former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood.
“We commend the FAA and the CDA for their efforts to make O’Hare International Airport a global leader in the aviation industry and an economic engine for the Chicago region,” Juracek said at the airport ceremony. “We also appreciate their commitment to be a good neighbor by funding the residential and school sound insulation programs for the thousands of children and residents impacted by aircraft noise.”
The new $41 million Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) air traffic control tower was built to manage aircraft operations on the new Runway 10R/28L. The commissioning of the runway and the south tower marks the completion of all south-airfield construction in the O'Hare Modernization Program (OMP).
Runway 10R/28L is the fifth east-west parallel runway at O'Hare and the fourth new runway component opened since 2008 as part of the OMP.
