Brendan Reilly, alderman of Chicago’s 42nd Ward, said in a press release that the Chicago Teachers Union's eulogy for Assata Shakur glorifies violence and extremism. He expressed concern that such rhetoric sends children the message that terrorism is an acceptable path to change.

"They honor a leader of freedom whose spirit continues to live in our struggle – while Shakur's spirit was really for violent overthrow. She practiced murder, armed robbery, and violence. She hated our country and was on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list," said Reilly, Alderman, 42nd Ward. "Honoring Assata Shakur is shameful and unacceptable. Why does this matter? Because when union leaders elevate someone tied to one of the most violent groups in American history, they are sending our children a dangerous message: that violence and extremism are acceptable paths to change. CTU should focus on representing their members, not pushing out their far-left extreme political agenda."

The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) recently posted a eulogy honoring Assata Shakur, who was convicted of first-degree murder of a New Jersey state trooper and later escaped prison in 1979. Shakur has been living in Cuba since then as a fugitive. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) lists her on its "Most Wanted Terrorists" list, with a $1 million reward for her capture.

Shakur was a member of the Black Liberation Army, a militant group active in the 1970s known for carrying out bombings, robberies, and violent attacks on police. According to the Department of Justice, the group has been linked to the murders of multiple law enforcement officers.

The CTU has been a powerful political voice in Chicago, often taking stances beyond labor issues. Chalkbeat Chicago reports that CTU has played a role in mayoral races and frequently sparred with city officials over policy positions.

Reilly has represented the 42nd Ward since 2007, covering downtown Chicago and parts of the Near North Side. As noted by the City of Chicago, he is a member of the City Council’s Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards and has been an outspoken voice on city safety and development.
