Gudrun “Gudy” Gaskill was born on March 14, 1927, in Palatine, Illinois. Her parents, Paul and Elsa Timmerhaus, welcomed her into a modest home. From a young age, Gudy showed a love for the outdoors. At 14, she began hiking when her father worked as a summer ranger at Rocky Mountain National Park.

Gudy’s passion for nature grew. She competed in skiing during her youth. She studied at Western State College of Colorado, earning a degree in education. Later, she obtained a master’s degree in recreation from the University of New Mexico.

Gudy became involved with the Colorado Mountain Club in 1952. She played a key role in creating the Colorado Trail. She planned the route, gathered donations, and organized volunteers. In 1987, she became the executive director of the Colorado Trail Foundation.

Gudy’s work earned her recognition. She was inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame in 2002. Several trail features were named in her honor, including the Gudy Gaskill Bridge and Gudy’s Rest.

Gudy’s connection to Palatine remained strong. Her legacy continues to inspire hikers and nature enthusiasts. Gudy passed away on July 14, 2016, in Denver, Colorado, at the age of 89. Her contributions to outdoor recreation are remembered.
