WASHINGTON - On May 31, 2023 , U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), a Chief Deputy Whip and Ranking Member of the Innovation, Data, and Commerce Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement commemorating Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month:

"As Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month comes to a close, we must recommit ourselves to uplifting the voices and ideas of the AANHPI community. I am honored to represent such a large and vibrant AANHPI community. The many cultures and customs present in the 9th Congressional District truly sets us apart.

“AANHPI history is American history. I am thankful for the trailblazers, like my dear friend and mentor, Patsy Mink, who was the first woman of color ever elected to Congress. I had the great privilege of serving with her when I first got elected. Patsy was a true advocate for so many who had no voice.

“As we commemorate the work of Patsy and other AANHPI leaders, it is also necessary and important for us to condemn the rising xenophobia and violence targeting the AANHPI community around the world. We must stand strong against hatred in all forms. Let us celebrate our diversity and build a more inclusive world where members of the AANHPI community and all people are treated with respect and dignity."
