New managing editor appointed by Newsday

The second-highest position in the newsroom, managing editor, will be held by Rochell Bishop Sleets when she joins Newsday. She’ll start on February 27.

Don Hudson, who took over as Newsday’s managing editor on December 1, will get Sleets’ reports.

Sleets currently oversees coverage of the arts and entertainment, the environment, corporate news, and education as one of the Chicago Tribune’s two news directors.

She has worked at the Tribune for 16 years, and during that time she assisted in the beginning of a project to expand the amount of Black and Latino neighbourhoods that are covered. Additionally, she organised Facebook Live discussions about COVID-19 with media journalists and UChicago Medicine experts.

She previously held positions at The Kansas City Star and the St. Paul Pioneer Press in Minnesota.

Sleets holds a master’s degree from National Louis University in Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Howard University.

Before moving to Chicago, she had editing and art direction positions at The Kansas City Star and The St. Paul Pioneer Press in Minnesota.

In New Jersey, Sleets was raised. Together with her engineer and former journalist spouse Gentry, she will reside on Long Island. They have four grown children as their children.
