At the The Glenview Village Board's Jan. 17 meeting, the board presented the annual Environmental Sustainability awards, which are sponsored by the Environment and Natural Resource Commission.
“We like to do this because it shows how community organizations, businesses, houses of worship and schools all collaborate with environmental sustainability here in communities in Glenview,” said Chris Newman, president of the Environment and Natural Resources Commission. “And it helps. This attention helps provide leadership opportunities and helps get attention for a lot of what's happening in the community.”
This year’s winner in the innovation category was Glenview School District 34. The district has had several environmentally focused additions to its schools over the past several years, including daylighting to decrease electricity use, using only energy-efficient equipment, planting more than 200 trees and installing stormwater systems.
The leadership award was given to Greener Glenview, who, since 2021, has focused on community environmental goals. Its endeavors include making a newsletter, monthly bulletins and holding outreach events attracting hundreds of people.
The education and outreach award went to Glenview Gardeners. This is a group of multi-generational gardeners working in a non-profit to help educate the public. The organization holds an annual plant sale and agricultural presentations.
Newman explained that over the five years the award has been given there have been a variety of nominations. He said there was one group several years ago that grew lettuce and vegetables in shipping containers using hydroponics. He said until they were told about the project they never would have known about this sustainable agriculture story.
