No. 1 Northwestern Falls 2-0 to No. 5 Iowa

 No. 1 Northwestern fell 2-0 to No. 5 Iowa to open Big Ten play in Evanston Friday afternoon. The loss moved Northwestern to 8-1 on the season and ended the Wildcats' 12-game win streak dating back to last season, tied fro the seoncd longest in program history.

Northwestern had gone 364 days since its last loss in Evanston, which came in the 2021 Big Ten opener against then-No. 10 Rutgers.

Despite the scoreline, the Wildcats managed to out shoot the Hawkeyes 16-3 while also holding a 6-0 advantage in penalty corners. Northwestern's attack has overwhelmed opposing defenses this season in those categories, leading opponents 192-67 in shots and 72-38 in penalty corners in 2022.

Two-time All-American Maddie Zimmer again flashed her brilliance with the stick, tearing off some impressive runs to set up the Northwestern offense. She finished tied with Bente Baekers for for the team lead with four shots.

Ana Medina Garcia tied her career high with two shots on goal, posting a 100% shot on goal percentage in the process. Sophomore Regan Cornelius also tied a career high by firing a shot.

The Wildcats had scored a goal in 81 consecutive games entering Friday, a streak that dated back to September 16, 2018. It's the longest such streak in Northwestern history.

Northwestern stays home this weekend to face Richmond Sunday at noon CT. Tickets will be free, and the game will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
