South Holland, IL: Harper College [3-7] traveled to South Holland tonight to play South Suburban College [2-2].
In the first set, after a 1-1 tie, Harper zoomed ahead to a 10-3 lead, prompting a timeout from the South Suburban coach. Harper extended the lead to 18-5 on some strong Brianna Spetka (Elk Grove/Conant H.S.) serving. Harper continued to push to 20-8 and then a 25-15 win. Outside Hitter Brianna Spetka (Elk Grove/Conant H.S.) was superb on defense with 6 digs. Libero Alyssa Rodda (Inverness/Barrington H.S.) added 5 digs. Brianna Spetka (Elk Grove/Conant H.S.) was 7-7 serving. Cana Jones (Walton, IN/Lewis Cass H.S.) was 5-5 serving with 2 aces.
In the second set, the scores were close and indeed tied at 7-7 and 8-8, before Harper made its 'run' to take a 14-10 lead and a19-10 lead, on toward a 25-16 win. Abbie Greenberg (Schaumburg/Schaumburg H.S.) had 4 kills and a block-assist. Stacey Maimur had 3 kills and no errors, and Ava Belluomini (Mount Prospect/Resurrection H.S>) had 3 kills and no errors. Setter Eden Suh (Buffalo Grove/Buffalo Grove H.S.) had 9 assists. Alyssa Rodda (Inverness/Barrington H.S.) was spectacular with 13 digs. Ava Belluomini (Mount Prospect/Resurrection H.S>) was just as spectacular on defense with 12 digs. Setter Eden Suh (Buffalo Grove/Buffalo Grove H.S.) had 5 digs of her own. Alyssa Rodda (Inverness/Barrington H.S.) got loose after missing her first serve, she served 9 serves in a row including an ace.
The third set went a bit differently… Harper fell behind 0-3, then 2-5. At 6-12, Harper earned a point with a very loud Cassie Schweikle (Lombard/Glenbard East H.S.) slam… which seemed to turn the tide… Harper began catching up and brought the score up from 8-14 all the way to 13-14 behind some strong Cassie Schweikle (Lombard/Glenbard East H.S.) serving, and then ties at 16-16, 17-17, 19-19 and 20-20. At that point, while Brianna Spetka (Elk Grove/Conant H.S.) served, Harper took a 23-20 lead… South Suburban pulled to 23-21, when Katie Hofmann (Des Plaines/Elk Grove H.S.) clobbered one. At game point, with Harper in the lead at 24-23, South Suburban missed the serve. Tess O'Gara (Chicago/Resurrection H.S.) led Harper with 3 kills. Eden Suh (Buffalo Grove/Buffalo Grove H.S.) added another 9 assists for 25 total assists for the match. Alyssa Rodda (Inverness/Barrington H.S.) led Harper with 6 more digs for a match-high 24 digs (8.0 digs/set). Cassie Schweikle (Lombard/Glenbard East H.S.) added 5 digs. Cassie Schweikle (Lombard/Glenbard East H.S.) was on a roll with 7-7 serving and 2 aces.
Next match will be on Tuesday at College of Lake County. Harper is off until Tuesday, September 6… but College of Lake County will have played in a strong tournament at Owens in Ohio that weekend.
