The Illinois Republican Party poked fun at 10th District Congressman Brad Schneider (D-Lake Bluff) for sloppiness related to filing his residence.
Schneider was recently found to have used a newly constructed home that had not been certified for habitation when he filed his candidacy petitions.
"Congressman Schneider is in serious danger of being removed from the primary ballot and having the embarrassment of hoping his local Democrat leadership rewards his blunder by slating him on the ballot for the general election," the Illinois Republican Party's website said.
According to the Daily Herald, Schneider is also accused of having defrauded taxpayers by claiming two homestead exemptions, one on his old home and one on the new home in the district that was just completed.
"But there’s more," the website stated. "Schneider’s new home is at the center of another controversy as he improperly took two property tax homestead exemptions last year on both his new home and his old one."
Schneider’s missteps of the new home and the tax has elicited criticism from many. Illinois 10th District Republican candidate Joe Severino said Schneider is showing his entitlement after 10 years in Congress.
"So, a pattern emerges for Schneider, one of an entitled ruling class crony who plays fast and loose with the rules…those pesky regulations that people like him institute, and then conveniently fail to observe," Severino said.
A former staffer for Schneider just pleaded guilty to fraud, according to Business Insider. Sterling Carter is accused of using his position in Schneider’s office to receive $80,000 in improper bonus payments. The 24-year-old has been charged with theft of public funds.
