State Senator Laura Murphy (D-Des Plaines) recently announced that Northwest suburbs in Illinois will receive over $11 million in grant funding to go towards infrastructure from the Rebuild Illinois program.
The funding is for efforts to maintain and improve infrastructure and boost economic growth and employment.
"Sound infrastructure is critical to our communities’ safety and success. These funds will allow our local governments to make much-needed upgrades to sidewalks, roads and bridges, making travel smoother and easier for all our residents," Sen. Laura Murphy wrote in a Facebook post.
Cities and municipalities may choose to use the grant for road and bridge improvements and more.
The funding is being distributed to ensure that local governments have the necessary resources to repair and maintain infrastructure.
The grant is the fourth round of six that total $1.5 billion through the Rebuild Illinois program.
“Rebuild Illinois doesn’t just revitalize our infrastructure — it creates high-quality jobs right here in the community,” Murphy told Illinois Senate Democrats. “This plan is critical to the long-term economic health of our region and of Illinois as a whole.”
The funds that recipients receive may go toward road and bridge improvements, traffic signal upgrades, new storm sewers and bike paths, sidewalk replacements and other long-term maintenance needs, with financial oversight from the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The Illinois Department of Transportations provides oversight to roads, railways, public transportation, and air. They carry the responsibility of building and maintaining public highways, regulating airports, and supervising passenger and freight railroad projects. The IDOT analyzes transportation options to see the effectiveness for its travelers, evaluate the infrastructure, and recommend improvements based on information from performance and demographics.
After taking care of the priorities, IDOT helps the community by providing transportation options that meet state and federal standards on safety and encourage economic growth to the community.
