Illinois Republicans and Republican lawmakers welcomed the recent resignation of Rep. Mike Madigan from his seat in the Legislature and as chair of the Democratic Party of Illinois. Joe Folisi, Schaumburg Township Republican Committeeman, is among them.

Folisi said in an interview with North Cook News, “he is largely responsible for landing Illinois in the unenviable position of one of the least desirable states to live in with its high taxes, high regulation, and government bureaucracy.”

Several representatives released statements thanking Madigan for his service and at the same time, saying that his resignation ushers a new age in ethics reform in the Legislature and called for anti-corruption legislation.

Madigan resigned after being implicated in federal bribery and corruption investigations. He was not charged with misconduct and maintains his innocence. Several of his associates involved in a bribery scheme with ComEd were indicted. Madigan held his seat for almost 40 years and was in politics for nearly five decades.

During his tenure, the state's credit rating was the worst in the nation, coupled with large pension debts and unbalanced budgets.

The state was also found as the second most corrupt in the U.S., in a study by the University of Illinois at Chicago, WGN9 reported.
