Des Plaines FD responds to 176 fires in 2018

Des Plaines Fire District responded to 1096 calls in 2018 - 4.7 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Des Plaines included 176 fires - 97 structure fires, 33 vehicle fires and 46 other fires. The fire department also responded to four calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $5,264,305 in fire loss - or about $29,911 per fire.

The department also received 916 false calls, including 11 malicious calls and 905 other false calls.

The calls resulted in two civilian fire-related injuries. Additionally, two fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents.

The Des Plaines Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 92 active employees and 110 retired or inactive employees, was $4,518,939 positive as of December 2017, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $31,165 for every fire in 2017.
