Evanston FD responds to 111 fires in 2018

Evanston Fire District responded to 1515 calls in 2018 - 5 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Evanston included 111 fires - 49 structure fires, 14 vehicle fires and 48 other fires. The fire department also responded to 11 calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $3,356,200 in fire loss - or about $30,236 per fire.

The department also received 1393 false calls, including 29 malicious calls and 1364 other false calls.

The calls resulted in six civilian fire-related injuries and one civilian fire-related death. Additionally, 12 fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents and one was injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Evanston Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 104 active employees and 139 retired or inactive employees, was $498,818 in debt as of December 2017, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $5,542 for every fire in 2017.
