Wheeling FD responds to 77 fires in 2018

Wheeling Fire District responded to 757 calls in 2018 - 2.2 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Wheeling included 77 fires - 54 structure fires, nine vehicle fires and 14 other fires. The fire department also responded to six calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $124,915 in fire loss - or about $1,622 per fire.

The department also received 674 false calls, including 15 malicious calls and 659 other false calls.

The calls resulted in four civilian fire-related injuries. Additionally, one fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents.

The Wheeling Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 47 active employees and 54 retired or inactive employees, was $1,695,240 positive as of December 2017, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $27,343 for every fire in 2017.
