City of Evanston issued the following announcement on May 12.
With May traditionally being a busy month for graduation parties and holiday celebrations, the City of Evanston is reminding residents about restrictions on public and private gatherings during the statewide Stay at Home Order, which runs until May 29.
In order to slow the spread of COVID-19 and save lives, Governor Pritzker's Stay at Home Order prohibits “all public and private gatherings of any number of people occurring outside a single household or living unit, except for when performing essential activities.” This restriction includes gatherings with friends and relatives who live outside of a person’s immediate household, as well as assemblies of vehicles for parades. These gatherings can present significant public health risks and do not comply with the Stay at Home Order.
"May is an exciting time of the year for graduates, parents, guardians and all those celebrating their tremendous achievements, but it's also a critical month for slowing the spread of COVID-19," said Health & Human Services Director Ike Ogbo. "It's important that all Evanston residents continue to do their part by staying home as required and leave for only essential activities, while following the guidance of our local, state and federal health officials. Our collective actions today will help ensure we can celebrate these milestones and many more holidays and special occasions together safely in the future. "
According to the CDC, COVID-19 is thought to be spread mainly from person-to-person when in close contact or through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. Some recent studies have shown that COVID-19 may be spread by people who are not showing symptoms.
Additional Reminders
In addition to staying at home except for essential activities, residents can help slow the spread of COVID-19 by taking the following actions:
- Wash hands frequently
- Avoid contact with those who are sick
- Maintain a physical distance of at least six feet from others
- Wear a cloth face covering when in public spaces, in compliance with City and State Order
- Cover coughs and sneezes
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces
