Glencoe Park District issued the following announcement on May 8.

Out of an abundance of caution to protect the health and safety of the Glencoe community, the Village of Glencoe Board of Trustees and Glencoe Park District Board of Commissions have made the joint decision to cancel all of Glencoe’s traditional 2020 4th of July activities in the midst of COVID-19 concerns. Canceled activities include the Glencoe Rotary’s Fun Run, games and Glencoe’s Got Talent at Kalk Park, Glencoe community parade, and Party in the Park and Fireworks display at Lakefront Park.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the cancelation of Glencoe’s treasured 4th of July festivities during this unprecedented time,” stated Village President Lawrence R. Levin. “However, it is paramount that we take all the precautions necessary in order to safeguard the health of Glencoe residents, Village and Glencoe Park District staff and event volunteers. Despite being unable to celebrate as we have in years prior, through our tremendous Glencoe spirit, we will find new ways to commemorate Independence Day together as a community.”

“We are disappointed that our annual 4th of July traditions need to be canceled,” said Lisa Brooks, President of the Park Board of Commissioners. “Our staff is working hard to come up with safe and meaningful ways to celebrate Independence Day.”

In addition to the 4th of July festivities, community events such as Movies on the Green, Meet the Machines and the Glencoe Sidewalk Sale have also been cancelled. The Glencoe Chamber of Commerce is also unable to host the Glencoe French Market, owing to their loss of their contract with their event planner.

The Village and Park District staff are working together to develop “virtual” and other non-contact ways to celebrate our community’s Independence Day spirit. In addition, both organizations will continue to monitor public health information during the rapidly changing COVID-19 environment and will work to provide the Glencoe community with updated programming information as it becomes available.
