Veteran state Rep. Tom Morrison (R-Palatine) is spearheading a volunteer drive in his 54th District aimed at protecting the most vulnerable as the coronavirus crisis continues to wreak havoc.
Morrison has recruited volunteers from across the community to shop for and deliver groceries or other essential items to seniors or anyone who can’t leave their home because of COVID-19.
“I want to give credit to Rep. Mark Batinick (R-Plainfield) who came up with idea,” Morrison told the North Cook News. “We just adopted it and are now reaching out to seniors via phone call, email or newspaper ad offering to help in any way we can. We want to let them know we have assembled a team of volunteers that are committed to being the help that they need.”
Public health officials have strongly recommended that seniors stay inside as a way of limiting the spread of the deadly virus. Morrison said he and his crew anticipate being around as long as they’re needed.
“Rather that’s the next month or however long it may be, we want to help,” he said.
Morrison said nothing about the way the people of his district have stepped up to help others in a time of crisis surprises him.
“My district and the people of Illinois are very generous people and they are concerned about their neighbors,” he said. “In the end, we feel like everyone can do something to help. Rather it’s sewing cotton masks that can be used in the hospitals, giving blood, filling a food pantry or calling on senior neighbors and offering to help by running errands everyone has something that they can give.”
