Glencoe Park District issued the following announcement on March 5.
The Village of Glencoe has confirmed that the employee who is under voluntary quarantine at home after being exposed to a confirmed case of COVID-19 is not the Illinois resident who recently tested positive for the virus. The Illinois Department of Public Health and Cook County Department of Public Health announced today a hospitalized Cook County resident is the fifth Illinois resident to test positive for COVID-19 after traveling to Italy. The Glencoe employee, who is not a resident of Glencoe, remains at home and is not experiencing symptoms.
The Village of Glencoe Public Works employee traveled internationally within the last two weeks, but did not travel to Italy. The employee was exposed to an individual while out of the country who subsequently tested positive for coronavirus. The individual with the confirmed case does not reside in the United States. The employee is eight days into the recommended 14-day incubation period and is consulting directly with their healthcare professional.
The employee was at work earlier this week after the exposure but had very limited contact with the general public during this time. The employee did not visit any Park District, Library or District 35 buildings/facilities, did not visit any public parks and did not visit any businesses in Glencoe while at work earlier this week.
“The Village is continuing to take proper safety measures as recommended by our federal, state and local health officials, which includes cleaning and disinfecting public spaces in Village facilities and employee work areas. We are also encouraging staff and the public to follow the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to prevent the spread of illness and the novel coronavirus,” Village Manager Philip Kiraly said. He added, “The most important thing right now is that our employee has not been diagnosed with the virus and thankfully, is not showing any symptoms.”
The CDC states that there is low risk to those in the same indoor environment (e.g., a classroom, a hospital waiting room) as a person with symptomatic laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 for a prolonged period of time. Individuals who have questions or concerns about their health should contact their primary care doctor or a healthcare professional for guidance.
