City of Evanston issued the following announcement on June 17.
On June 10, the Evanston City Council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution affirming the City’s commitment to end structural racism and achieve racial equity.
In adopting the resolution, the Evanston City Council acknowledged its own history of racially-motivated policies and practices, and reaffirmed its commitment, in collaboration with residents, to pursue policies and take actions to ensure civil and human rights to all individuals.
The resolution, which can be found at cityofevanston.org/equity, supports the City Council’s 2019-2020 goal to “Ensure equity in all City operations” and is modeled after successful racial equity initiatives adopted by other cities as well as the Kellogg Foundation’s Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation model. 9th Ward Ald. Cicely Fleming introduced the resolution.
As part of the resolution, the City Council committed to participate in racial equity training. The City will also join the Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE), a national network of governments working to achieve racial equity and advance opportunities for all.
