Palatine Community Consolidated School District 15 issued the following announcement on Nov. 29.

Thanks to a generous grant from the USDA, Jane Addams Elementary School received $28,400 to purchase fresh fruits and vegetable snacks to students each week.

All students in the building receive a morning or afternoon snack twice per week. One day per week that snack is a fresh fruit, and the other day, it is a fresh vegetable.

The goal of the initiative is to create healthier school environments by providing better food choices and to expand the variety of fruits and vegetables children experience.

The program is seen as an important catalyst for change in efforts to combat childhood obesity, by helping children form healthier eating habits.
