Marilyn Smolenski: 'This is not where our story and our fight for our state ends.'
GOP House candidate Marilyn Smolenski thanked supporters on Facebook after her loss to incumbent Rep. Martin Moylan (D-Des Plaines), by a 55-45 margin.
“While our campaign did not reach the outcome we were hoping for, I am proud of the race we ran and thankful for the friends we’ve made,” the District 55 candidate wrote on Facebook Wednesday. “I congratulate Marty Moylan on his victory and hope that he will represent the district admirably.”
Moylan had 56 percent of the vote, with 19,826 votes, to Smolenski's 45 percent, or 15,976 votes.
State Rep. Martin Moylan (D-Des Plaines) is re-elected.
During her campaign, Smolenski aligned with a number of Republican colleagues by signing a letter rejecting tax hikes, pledging to fight for term limits and refusing a legislative pension if elected.
Moylan’s campaign was marked by a viral video of him chanting support for House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) and by a report of an altercation with a constituent as he campaigned door to door.
“I appreciate your support, encouragement and faith over the last 13 months,” Smolenski added in her message to supporters. “This is not where our story and fight for our state ends! I will remain dedicated to fighting for our homes and families.”
