Republican state Senate candidate Barrett Davie vows to introduce school safety legislation in Springfield modeled after the Northbrook School District plan and its focus on disaster preparedness by the entire community.

“We’re here at Wood Oaks in Northbrook District 27 where they are leading the nation with a plan called EPT 27 (Emergency Preparedness Plan 27) that works with local communities, police, fire and church,” Davie said in a video posted to Facebook. “It works in a number of capacities that provide for effective safety on the ground right here at our school.”

Davie said it was re-enforced for him that something has to change after his fourth-grade son walked into his classroom this year and saw instruction plastered on a wall alerting students of what to do if a gunmen ever posed a danger at the school

Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield)

“My wife and I have three kids … we knew we were living in a different world,” said Davie, who is running against Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield) for the 29th Senate District seat.

The son of a Chicago police officer who spent 35 years on the force, Davie and his siblings grew up having a responsible appreciation for firearms, he said.

“We were taught to respect guns, taught about gun safety, taught how to use guns,” he wrote. “I believe in responsible gun ownership with reasonable restrictions, like a ban on bump stocks, like a ban 'on high capacity magazines.'”

Davie said he respects places like Highwood, Highland Park and Deerfield, all of which have passed gun laws based on the desires of the taxpayers in their communities.

“We want to keep our kids safe and we believe in personal responsibility,” he said.

The 29th district includes portions of the north suburbs of Chicago in Lake and Cook counties.
