Township High School District 214 students suspended, expelled 2,309 times in a single school year

Township High School District 214 reported two expulsions and 2,307 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 2,309 students during the year. That equates to 19.3 percent of the 11,978 students enrolled.

Students were expelled for two incidents with unspecified reasons.

Of the 1,891 in-school suspensions, 1,315 were given to boys and 576 were given to girls, all of whom were high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 1,712 incidents. There were 109 incidents of drugs. For 1,629 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 416 out-of-school suspensions, 317 were given to boys and 99 were given to girls, all of whom were high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 204 incidents. There were 102 incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For 224 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
