Trevians boys' basketball expects big things in season ahead

Newtrier7

The New Trier boys’ basketball team is looking for big things from its lineup this season.

In Ciaran Brayboy, Spencer Boehm and Sam Silverstein, the Trevians’ lineup features at least three regulars 6-foot-5 or taller.

“We’re definitely going to be one of the biggest teams in the state, if not the biggest,” Boehm, who at 6-foot-8 falls in the middle of the pack, told the Chicago Tribune. As juniors, the big three led the team to the Class 4A sectional final and a 25-6 finish.

New Trier Coach Scott Fricke

Coach Scott Fricke is looking for even bigger things from his trio of senior stars this time around.

“The three (incoming) seniors got the experience of playing in a sectional final and winning 25 games,” he told the Tribune. “The leadership is what they need to bring to the table. Their skill is great, but they are still hungry and want to improve. They will have to score more than last year. Our guards scored a lot of points for us. Leadership is the big thing we need from those guys.”

The 6-foot-9 Braboy and Boehm have already started to turn heads, with Braboy having already committed to attend Harvard, and Boehm attracting interest from Dartmouth and Columbia.

“I’ve improved my shooting a lot,” said Boehm, who has also added 15 pounds to his now 220-pound frame. “With Ciaran inside, I have to choose my spots, whether it’s a quick post-up or shooting a three. My passing has improved, especially in transition.”

Boehm, who averaged 9.1 points and 5.3 rebounds last season, said the Trevians have made dethroning Central Suburban South (CSL) champs Evanston one of their primary goals this season. The two teams posted identical 8-2 CSL South records last season and the Wildkits return four starters this season.

“With the development of the guards, the chemistry and Ciaran and I, we should be able to do some damage this year like we did last year,” Boehm said. “We did very well last year. We can learn from that experience and what it takes to get to that level.”
