Evanston FD responds to 90 fires in 2017

Evanston Fire Department responded to 1443 calls in 2017 - 1.1 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Evanston included 90 fires - 43 structure fires, 12 vehicle fires and 35 other fires. The fire department also responded to 11 calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,004,979 in fire loss - or about $11,166 per fire.

The department also received 1342 false calls, including 34 malicious calls and 1308 other false calls.

The calls resulted in five civilian fire-related injuries. Additionally, five fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents and three were injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Evanston Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 103 active employees and 140 retired or inactive employees, was $4,275,935 in debt as of December 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $36,862 for every fire in 2016.
