Marilyn Smolenski is calling for the resignation of House Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago) in the wake of claims allies of the powerful legislator sought to retaliate against Rep. Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago) for raising questions about his handling of sexual harassment allegations made against an aide.

“Do you like Mike?” Smolenski, who is running against Rep. Marty Moylan (D-Des Plaines) in House District 55, posted on Facebook. “Do you like this old boys club that protects its own self-interests rather than victims of harassment? Do you like this political machine that threatens and retaliates against anyone who doesn’t move lockstep with their agenda? Moylan continues to serve himself and the corrupt Chicago machine. Moylan should demand Madigan resign and pledge not to take any money or support from him.

The Chicago Tribune has reported Cassidy claims she was forced to resign from her part-time job in Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart’s office after she publicly questioned Madigan’s handling of sexual harassment claims in his political and government organizations.

While Madigan recently denied ever taking any such actions against Cassidy in a letter he wrote to her, Smolenski doesn’t appear to be swayed by his claims.

“Let’s put an end to the political ruling class that thinks the rules don’t apply to them,” Smolenski added in her post. “I’m running to represent you. Moylan continues to serve himself and the corrupt Chicago machine. Moylan should demand Madigan resign and pledge not to take any money or support from him. By any common sense standard, it is the right thing to do.”
