Maine Township Trustee Laura Morask, a candidate for township supervisor, announced the formation of the Republican Unity Slate for the April 4 election.
The newly formed party has launched a website and a Facebook page and has scheduled a fundraiser.
"We are really excited to introduce our Republican Unity Slate to residents as we have such a great mix of experience and fresh faces who are united in the goal of fiscal responsibility to our township and providing the award-winning services for just pennies on your tax dollar," Morask said in a prepared statement.
Maine Township is known for its efforts to keep its resident services high while keeping the tax rate below 2 percent of the property tax bills. The township has consistently balanced its budget while keeping the property tax levy flat and operating with no debt load.
“Keeping the tax levy flat means that Maine Township did not ask you, the taxpayer, for more money! That is good government,” Morask said in the press release.
The current slate of candidates includes familiar faces, including Morask who is a four-term trustee of the township. Morask was a veteran prosecutor that spent much of her career as a trial lawyer fighting crime and gangs. After retiring from Cook County, she founded her own law firm in 2012.
As a trustee, she established Maine Township's first gang crimes seminar for residents. The seminar grew from the initial 20 attendees to more than 100 who came to hear the panel of police chiefs, prosecutors and the Cook County states attorney. She also assisted the Township Code Enforcement and Highway departments in educating residents on how to identify gang graffiti and the importance of its quick removal.
Morask has received several awards for her service to youth and the community. She received the Statewide Friend of Youth award from the Township Officials of Illinois for best youth program development. She also received the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce Community Star award in 2012 and the Award for Exemplary Service in Elected Office in 2015.
Other candidates on the Republican Unity Slate are Peter Gialamas for clerk, Walter Kazmierczak for highway commissioner and Susan Moylan Krey for assessor. David Carrabotta, Kimberly Jones, Kelly Schaefer and Susan Sweeney are running for the board of trustee seats. Morask, Kazmierczak and Krey are running unopposed in the April election.
The Republican candidates have pledged to continue Maine Township's fiscally responsible budgeting and accountability to its residents. Republican Committeeman Char Foss-Eggemann said that the combination of experienced board members and new faces offers voters a strong slate in the upcoming election.
The Unity Slate will participate in a candidate's forum, which will also include all non-partisan candidates. The forum, co-sponsored by the Republican Women of Park Ridge and the Maine Township Republican Women's Club, will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at the O'Connor Building, 733 N. Prospect Ave., Park Ridge. Admission to the event is free. Desserts and coffee will be served.
The Republican Unity Slate is inviting the public in honoring the Founding Fathers on President's Day, Feb. 23. The fundraiser will be held from 5:30 to 7: 30 p.m. at the Countryside Saloon, 2501 E. Ballard Road, Des Plaines. Tickets are $75; groups of 10 will be given reserved seating and special recognition for their support. “Our fundraiser promises to be a fun filled festive tribute to our Founding Fathers whose principles of government of the people, by the people and for the people, we pledge to carry on,” Morask said.
