Park Ridge historic preservation commissioners discuss poster contest

The city of Park Ridge Historic Preservation Commission met Oct. 5 to discuss the poster contest.

Here is the meeting's agenda, as provided by the commission:

"Consists of nine citizen members, with a range of expertise in law, real estate, architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, city planning, anthropology, history, art, building construction or finance. The Commission serves to preserve, enhance and restore for use those properties and areas that have special historical, architectural, community or aesthetic significance in the community, in the interest of promoting the public health, safety and general welfare of Park Ridge."

Chair Barclay called the meeting to order at 6:02pm.

B. Approval of Minutes – June 1, 2016

On a motion by Commissioner Mattingly, seconded by Commissioner Tiu, the Commission approved the minutes from the June 1, 2016 meeting, as submitted.

This motion was unanimously approved by voice vote.

1. Discussion Items

i. Architectural Survey

Chair Barclay explained that Ms. Guzek would not be present at this meeting and wanted to make sure that the thumb drives were made available to the Commission over the summer. The Commission agreed that they had ample time to review the material. Commissioner Adlaf mentioned he forwarded comments to Mr. Branham, which were addressed. It was noted that the survey has taken almost three years to complete.

ii. Poster Contest

Chair Tiu discussed the deadline and application process for the poster contest for the upcoming year. It was discussed that the deadline would be sometime during the end of March, taking into consideration Spring Break dates.

Commissioners Mattlingly and Sergo volunteered to help assist with the poster contest.

iii. 100 Year-Old Homes

Three homes were added to the 100 Year-Old Home Honor Roll. The addresses were: 230 South Vine Avenue, 225 South Vine Avenue and 525 North Prospect

Avenue. Mr. Branham said he would investigate incorporating this list with the GIS Landmark Map page on the City website. Commissioner Tiu indicated that May is Historic Preservation Month and suggested the possibility of publishing the list of 100 Year-Old Homes in the local media.

F. New Business

Alderman Shubert introduced a Facebook page entitled “Park Ridge, It’s a Wonderful Life” as a possible way to increase awareness of Historic Preservation. Alderman Shubert explained that the Facebook page is a closed group but the general public may ask to join by selecting “like” on the page. Chair Barclay encouraged Commissioners to investigate the potential of utilizing the Facebook page.

Chair Newman brought up the topic of Hinkley Park becoming a designated landmark.

Chair Barclay agreed to look into this matter.

G. Adjournment

On a motion by Commissioner Mattingly, seconded by Commissioner Adlaf, the Commission agreed to adjourn the meeting.

This motion was unanimously approved by voice vote.
