The Chicago Tribune recently endorsed Republican candidate Jessica Tucker in the District 18 state House race after finding no substantial independent thinking on the part of her opponent, state Rep. Robyn Gabel (D-Evanston).
“We struggled to find any key votes on which Gabel demonstrated independence from her party — the very same party that is largely responsible for the state's fiscal mess,” the Tribune said.
The publication’s backing was rendered more significant by its otherwise generally positive appraisal of Tucker’s opponent. While conceding that Gabel did display a satisfactory work ethic, the Tribune concluded that “Tucker … is correct when she says Gabel toes the party line.”
Tucker, the former mayor of Winnetka, brings local governing experience to her grassroots candidacy. Starting as a Winnetka village trustee in 2004, she was elected to village president in 2009. During her tenure, she proved adept at balancing the budget, maintaining a high credit rating and striving for efficient services.
After concluding that Gabel would be unlikely to manifest change within her party or the General Assembly, the Tribune clarified its choice.
“Tucker, meanwhile, tried to bring more affordable housing to her town several years ago,” the newspaper said. “She got shut down by residents, but she was willing to take political risk to do what was right. Tucker is endorsed.”
The candidate’s 2011 initiative for equal housing opportunity in her city, long known as an affluent area, created controversy among citizens hesitant to embrace subsidized housing. When opponents feared lower property values, she urged residents to approach the issue fairly.
“I will be a strong, independent voice for fiscal discipline, transparency and accountability,” Tucker said early in her state House campaign. “I hope I will have the privilege of representing the wonderful residents in the 18th District.”
Illinois’ 18th District includes portions of Northbrook, Glencoe, Winnetka, Northfield, Kenilworth, Wilmette and Evanston.
