The Village of Wheeling board of health heard updates on ongoing programs at its meeting on March 22.

The board met in the Scanlon Conference Room at 2 Community Blvd.

First off, the board discussed the ongoing blood drives. It coordinates three blood drives every year. The 2016 blood drives are on March 9, July 13 and Nov. 9. Lifesource conducts the blood drives at the Village Hall. The March blood drive offered door prizes to donors; winning donors received gift certificates from Wheeling restaurants. While appointments are available for the blood drives, walk-in donors are welcome, as well.

The board also heard an update on the prescription drugs recycling program. Under old business, the board revisited the community-based walking program discussed at previous meetings.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended 150 minutes of brisk walking per week for good health. Walking 30 minutes a day, five days per week, helps strengthen the heart and lungs. Adding muscle-strengthening exercises two days per week helps build up the major muscle groups of the body.
