Police Department offers new driver information to teenage drivers and their parents or guardians.
Registration is now open for the "Safe Teen" driving seminar for teen drivers and their parents or guardians.
The two-hour seminar on April 12 is offered by the Elgin Police Department and will be taught by traffic officers. New drivers will learn about driving scenarios and what to do in emergency situations. Distracted driving, seat belts, teen driver risks and other real-life situations will be discussed at the seminar. The differences between adult and teenage drivers licenses will also be explained.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statistics show that teens between 16 and 19 years old have the highest risk of being involved in a motor vehicle accident. When including the number of miles driven, teens are almost three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash. The risk of a car accident is highest during the first few months after receiving a license. Inexperience, speeding, buzzed or drunk driving and not wearing a seat belt are among the major risk factors for teen drivers.
Online registration is available here until April 10. There is no fee for the class. A parent or guardian must accompany attendees under the age of 18. Elgin residents will be given priority over nonresidents. The seminar will be held at the Elgin Police Department, 151 Douglas Ave.
