The Sustainability Commission of Elgin, Illinois set to discuss micro pigs, solar ordinance modifications and upcoming programs at tonight's meeting.
A discussion will follow the presentation on micro pigs by Elgin resident Dominick Mollica. The commission will meet at 6:15 p.m. in the second floor conference room of City Hall, 150 Dexter Ct.
Micro pigs are significantly smaller than the average farm pig, which can weigh up to 700 pounds. Miniature pigs range from less than 55 pounds up to 150 pounds, depending on the breed. In some cities, pigs of any size are considered farm animals. Additional issues include finding a veterinarian that will treat pigs, the adult size of the pig, training and the pig's 15 to 20 year life span.
After talking about micro pigs, the commission will move on to the continuing discussion on the city's solar ordinance and possible modifications. The Partners for Places grant proposal will also be discussed, including project ideas, requirements and scheduling.
The commission will also discuss the Conservation Foundation rain barrel partnership program. Rain barrels allow residents to save rainwater for later uses, such as watering the garden. The commissioners will discuss the logistics and pickup of rain barrels.
The 2016 National Mayor's Challenge for Conservation is also on the agenda for review. The commission will consider partnership support and outreach efforts.
