Park Ridge Police reports 100 percent compliance by stores selling tobacco.
The City of Park Ridge announced that the tobacco compliance inspections conducted by the police department on Feb. 22 witnessed a 100 percent compliance rate.
The underage teen volunteers -- supervised by the police -- attempted to buy tobacco products at all 15 Park Ridge stores that sell cigarettes and tobacco products and were refused sale.
“According to the American Journal of Public Health in June 2013, states with more restrictive limits on teenagers purchasing tobacco have lower adult smoking rates,” Police Chief Frank Kaminski said. “Keeping tobacco products out of kids' hands is a critical part of helping reduce underage tobacco use, and I am pleased that every business in our town offering tobacco products for sale was in compliance. It illustrates that these merchants are taking a responsible role in restricting youth access to tobacco.”
Park Ridge congratulates the 15 retail stores and their staff members for complying with state law and city municipal codes. By refusing to sell tobacco to teens, the stores are helping reduce teen health risks from tobacco use and reduce adult smoking rates.
Stores inspected include Amoco/BP, Around the World, Jewel/Osco, Marathon, OK Smokers Tobacco, Save-A-Lot, three Shell gas stations, Thorton’s, two Walgreens and three 7-11 stores.
