ComEd plans to install smart meters at homes and small businesses in Wilmette.

The Village of Wilmette has announced that ComEd crews will be installing smart meters this spring.

ComEd plans to complete approximately four million smart meter installations in northern Illinois before 2019.

Residents and owners of small businesses will receive letters in the mail that will provide installation dates in their area. The installer will be wearing a uniform and have an official ID from ComEd, Corix or MZI Group. The area in front of the existing meter should be clear, with nothing blocking access. The installation will take approximately 10 minutes. It is free.

Smart meters allow residents to manage their electric bills with online tools and weekly energy reports. Alerts warn residents of high usage. Residents who have smart meters are eligible to enroll in the Peak Time Savings, Residential Real-Time Pricing and other money-saving programs. The Peak Time Savings program allows residents to earn credits on electric bills by using high-energy appliances, such as washers and dryers, during off-peak hours.

Smart meters are an important element of the smart grid, which uses technology to find and notify ComEd of power outages or other problems. When the grid is complete, information on outages will be automatically transmitted to ComEd and routed for repairs. As part of the smart meter and smart grid installation, ComEd is also testing, repairing and replacing electric infrastructure to improve reliability.
