During the ongoing federal government shutdown, the Village of Skokie has announced the availability of local resources and support services for residents who may be affected by loss of income or other hardships.
The Village’s Health and Human Services Department offers an Emergency Financial Assistance Program for Skokie residents facing urgent, short-term financial difficulties. This program can help with overdue rent or mortgage payments, as well as utility bills from ComEd and Nicor that are at risk of disconnection.
Niles Township also provides emergency financial assistance to eligible residents. To qualify, individuals must have received a five-day eviction notice from a landlord or a utility disconnection notice.
Residents in suburban Cook County who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can contact the Entry Point Call Center at 1-877-426-6515 for referrals to assistance resources.
For food support, services are available through the Niles Township Food Pantry and the Humans At Help Foundation.
Several utility assistance programs are available to help residents manage energy costs. These include the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), ComEd payment assistance programs, and Nicor Gas bill payment assistance programs. The Village’s Health and Human Services Department can assist residents in applying for Nicor Gas bill support through the Energy Aide and Nicor Sharing programs. Residents can call 847-933-8252 for more information.
Guidance for those receiving housing assistance from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is available through the National Housing Law Project.
For further questions or more information about these resources, residents are encouraged to contact the Village of Skokie Health and Human Services Department at 847-933-8252. The Illinois Department of Human Services also provides additional resources and guidance.
