Active rat control cases in Skokie have been declining since reaching a peak in February 2024, according to an update presented by the Skokie Health and Human Services Department at the Village Board meeting on October 9, 2025. Officials say that continued progress will require ongoing participation from residents across the community.

The department credits several measures for this improvement. "The Village has added internal and contractual resources, enhanced public education, and taken a coordinated, multi-department approach to rat control," officials stated during the meeting.

As part of ongoing efforts this month, the Building and Inspection Services Division is conducting seasonal property inspections targeting areas known for high rat activity. Staff are focusing on conditions that contribute to infestations and are identifying burrows for treatment.

Officials emphasize that resident involvement is key to sustaining these gains. They encourage prompt reporting of any signs of rat activity to prevent small problems from becoming larger ones. Residents are also advised to remove food sources such as bird seed, pet waste, grill residue, exposed compost, and overflowing trash; eliminate standing water from pet bowls or outdoor containers; maintain vegetation near building foundations; clear clutter and debris that could provide shelter for rats; and share these recommendations with neighbors.

Village staff say that making individual properties less hospitable can help reduce overall rat presence throughout Skokie.
