On January 13, 2025, we at North Cook News sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Evanston-Skokie Community Consolidated School District 65 in Illinois. The request sought information about the number of non-U.S. citizens, referred to as "migrants," currently enrolled in the school district.

As a media organization dedicated to comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, access to public records is crucial for us. It allows us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.

We believe that as members of the media involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.

The average student-to-administrative ratio is 141:1, and the average student-to-teacher ratio is 17:1. Interestingly, 58% of teachers in Illinois have a master's degree or higher.

The requested information will provide valuable insights into demographic trends within our school districts and help shed light on issues related to immigration and education policy.
