Village of Buffalo Grove Rick Kahen Commission for Residents with Disabilities met Aug. 23.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

I. Welcome & Call to Order at 7:01pm 

II. Roll Call 

a. Commissioners Present: Chair Judy Samuels, Vice Chair Marty Sussman, Commissioners Mark Weiner, Dean Klassman, Jack Shapiro, Allie Zalay, Lexi Robinson, Debbie Verson, Matthew Dragon, Avi Samuels

b. Commissioners Not Present: Commissioners, Donna Garfield, Gowri Magati, Beth Shapiro, Leo Njongmeta

c. Trustee Liaison Present: David Weidenfeld

d. Staff Liaison Present: Evan Michel

III. Approval of Minutes with Changes: July 26, 2023

a. Motion: Commissioner Weiner

b. Second: Commissioner J. Shapiro

c. In Favor: All

d. Opposed: None

e. Abstain: Commissioners Verson and A. Samuels

f. Motion passes 

IV. Chair report (Judy Samuels)

a. The remaining meeting dates for the year are as follows:

i. September 27, October 18, and November 15

b. The first meeting for next year will be held on the following date:

i. January 24, 2024

V. Trustee(s) report (Andy Stein / David Weidenfeld)

a. Trustee Stein is looking forward to a great BG Days!

VI. Staff Liaison Report (Evan Michel)

a. Staff Liaison Michel passed out parking passes for those who are volunteering and driving the courtesy shuttle during BG Days.

VII. Sub-Committee report 

a. Buffalo Grove Days (8/31 – 9/4) 

i. Buddy Baseball (9/2; 9/3-Rain date) (Commissioner Klassman)

• Water is set, pizza is set

a. Staff Liaison Michel will ensure there is money for the tip for pizza

• Participation medals have been ordered for players

• Commissioner Zalay has boxes of t-shirts

• A police officer will be present to support/direct traffic

• Park District is set to get tables out

• Commissioners should arrive at 4pm

• Former President Sussman will throw out the first pitch to President Smith

a. President Smith will announce all the elected officials present 

• Registration Update (Commissioner Robinson)

a. Players = 34

b. Buddies = 9

ii. Fun and Food (9/4) (Commissioner Verson) 

• There will be fun and there will be food!

• Commissioners should arrive at 9am

• Sandwiches will be delivered by Jimmy Johns by 10am

• Commissioner Dragon or Garfield will pick up the cookies at 9am 

• Water is all set (650 bottles between baseball and Fun & Food) 

• A band will be present at the event between both Fun & Food and the car show

• Volunteers for registration – organize registration by Last Name A-H, I-P, Q-Z

a. Vice Chair Sussman and Beverly

c. Commissioner Klassman

• Tickets for meals, ticket for Kona Ice, wrist bands for carnival rides 

• Volunteers to bag food:

a. Commissioner Verson

• Registration update (Commissioner Robinson) 

a. There are currently 426 people registered for Fun & Food.

i. Participants = 84

ii. Additional Family Members = 303

iii. 3 organizations with 39 participants

iii. Courtesy Shuttle (8/31 – 9/4) (Chair Samuels)

• Keys for the courtesy shuttles will be distributed to drivers at the info tent/with the police department.

• Shuttle drivers will get a quick tutorial and Staff Liaison Michel will give a quick one pager of this is what you do on the shuttle.

• If a commissioner has an extenuating circumstance and is unable to drive their shift, contact Staff Liaison Michel as soon as possible via email.

b. Buddy Bowling (10/25) (Commissioner Weiner) 

i. Updates

• A flier has been created with a QR code for registration which will be shared out.

• Registration for Buddy Bowling will close off at 90 participants. 

• Commissioner Weiner will send the invitation to past Buddy Bowling participants this weekend.

• Commissioner Robinson will send the invitation to the Fun & Food lists on September 11th.

• Vice Chair Sussman will send the invitation to the school districts on September 5th.

ii. Potential use of gift cards question (Commissioner Zalay)

• Staff Liaison Michel will inquire about the potential use of gift cards for Bowlero.

VIII. Unfinished Business 

a. The RKCRD Strategic Plan will be presented to the Village Board at some point likely in October 2023.

i. After Buffalo Grove Days, a relationship between the RKCRD and th Development Team will occur to generate clarity around the process and flow of support for ADA compliance of new construction and property development.
